Good Girl Recovery, Part 2
Discovering “the Voice”

If you are one who’s intuition is concealed, here are some points to regain that brilliant guiding force within you:

Realize “the Voice” may not be a voice after all for you. I also get chills all over my body, visions, a simple “knowing,” a feeling of being compelled so strongly that I couldn’t stop my direction if I tried. In other words, believe that your intuition (also called: gut feeling, inner voice, sixth sense, etc.) will arrive in whatever way it wants. Do not place restrictions on how or when it shows up.

If you have a spiritual practice now, pray, affirm, ask God (or whatever word you prefer for your Higher Power) to allow that intuitive voice to show up in whatever manner is best. Ask for it to be shown, heard, or felt clearly and gently. (I have been know to learn things by being whacked—on the head, in the ankle, or other body parts). Those are physically painful ways to hear your intuition.

If you haven’t developed a spiritual practice, simply state out loud (to yourself looking in the mirror, preferably) as often as you like, “I can now hear, see, and feel my intuition at all times.” The more you repeat this to yourself, the faster your belief system will change. (This, though spiritual to some of us, is also based on brain research and the concept of creating new neural pathways).

Play with your intuition: Try guessing who’s calling (or texting) when you hear a ring tone. Guess at other things too—which elevator will arrive first (if there are no indicators), which suit will come up next when flipping cards over. (Attempting to guess an exact card is really hard; guessing a suit is challenging enough with only 25% chance of getting it correct)!

Live in trust and have patience! In order to make changes, it takes time. How many years have you buried your intuition? Don’t worry, it won’t take that long to surface again. But realize it just might not be overnight.

To really trust and follow through with a guiding source, in this case your intuition, is a big step in most people’s lives. After spending fourteen years speaking to thousands of people (mostly women) about the importance of not just hearing, but following their intuition, I’ve found many know the signals, but most don’t follow its guidance, even close to 100% of the time. They bargain (yes I’ve done this too!), hoping to get out of what is really in their best interest (even if it is a hard path to follow).

Do what you can to listen, see, and feel that wise part of you that knows what’s best. The more you allow that voice to lead you, the better your life will be; the fast you’ll recover from the good girl syndrome .™ It made all the difference in my life!
